Pirates' Big Game Specialist Catches Turkish Eyes

Pirates' Big Game Specialist Catches Turkish Eyes

DURBAN, SOUTH AFRICA - MAY 10: Evidence Makgopa of Orlando Pirates celebrates a goal during the Nedbank Cup, Final match between Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs

A South African striker whose knack for scoring in crucial fixtures has caught the attention of foreign scouts is now facing a potentially career-defining summer, with multiple European clubs reportedly expressing interest in securing his services.

The Bafana Bafana forward, Evidence Makgopa who has been particularly impressive in high-profile matches, is attracting suitors from new territories as his current contract approaches its conclusion.

As previously reported by Soccer Laduma, clubs in Poland and Norway have in the past shown interest in the Orlando Pirates striker and now sources close to the club have indicated to the publication that there is new interest.

The insiders who are privy to reliable information have added that now clubs in Turkey and Belgium have also enquired about Makgopa with the intention of signing him.

"It's true there was initial interest just after AFCON but nothing much came out of that. Now it's believed that teams in Turkey and Belgium have enquired about him and they have shown serious interest," the source told Soccer Laduma.

Meanwhile a second insider stated that the Buccaneers have made it clear that they are working on keeping the Bafana Bafana striker.

"Although there is interest in Makgopa, the club is also believed to be in the advanced stages of keeping him as his initial contract is coming to an end in June this year. So if the move to Europe can happen later, that means the team will benefit from the sale as he won't be leaving for free. But apparently it's true there is interest from Europe," the second insider revealed.

The 24-year-old joined Pirates in 2022 on a three-year contract and he has so far played a significant amount of games scoring many goals for his club while also starring for South Africa internationally.

This developing situation represents a critical juncture for both Makgopa and Bucs, with timing playing a crucial role in determining the outcome.

For the striker, a move to either Turkey or Belgium could provide the European platform that many South African players desire, potentially following in the footsteps of Percy Tau and Lyle Foster who have successfully made the transition abroad.

For Pirates, securing a transfer fee for a player approaching the end of his contract would represent smart business, though they clearly value his contributions enough to pursue a contract extension and hold onto him.

With the transfer window approaching and Makgopa's stock continuing to rise with each big-game performance, the coming season could prove decisive in determining whether he becomes the next South African to test himself in European competition.
