With Jose Riveiro officially set to leave Orlando Pirates at the end of the 2024/25 season, speculation is already swirling over what his next move could mean for some of the Buccaneers’ top talents – particularly Monnapule Saleng.
On Monday, Pirates confirmed that Riveiro will take charge of the team for the final time when they face Golden Arrows on Tuesday evening.

As announced on the club’s official platforms, the Spanish tactician has been granted an early release from his contract, which was initially due to run until the end of June 2025, after agreeing to join another club.
According to Siya sources, Riveiro is expected to be unveiled as the new head coach of Egyptian giants Al Ahly before the end of the week, as the record CAF Champions League winners gear up for their campaign in the upcoming FIFA Club World Cup.
“There is huge excitement in Egypt right now. Fans and the local media can’t wait to see Riveiro arrive and start preparing Al Ahly for the Club World Cup,” a Siya source close to the situation confirmed.
While Riveiro’s departure marks the end of an era at Pirates, it could simultaneously signal a fresh start for Saleng, whose future has been the subject of intense speculation in recent months.
The Bafana Bafana winger has not featured for the Buccaneers since their CAF Champions League group stage clash against Al Ahly earlier this season.
His extended absence raised eyebrows across the football fraternity, with many questioning his omission, especially given his explosive form last season.
As Soccer Laduma previously reported, Saleng’s failed move to Al Ahly in January had nothing to do with his lack of game-time in the second half of the campaign.
In fact, insiders have insisted that Riveiro remained a staunch admirer of the 26-year-old, but circumstances beyond his control limited his options.
“It was never about the coach not rating Saleng. In fact, he’s one of his favourite players. But with certain dynamics at play, it just became harder to reintegrate him into the side,” said a second source close to the club.
With Riveiro now seemingly on his way to the Cairo giants, there is growing belief that his arrival at Al Ahly could reignite their pursuit of Saleng.
The Red Devils have long admired the winger's direct style, pace and ability to influence games in the final third – qualities Riveiro knows all too well.

Should the Egyptian heavyweights choose to revive their interest, the prospect of reuniting with his former mentor could make the move even more appealing for Saleng, who may be eager to reignite his career on a new stage after a frustrating season.
While nothing has been confirmed yet regarding Al Ahly's transfer plans, it would come as no surprise if Saleng’s name resurfaces on their radar – and this time, with Riveiro potentially leading the charge, a deal could be more feasible than ever before.
