The German international became the most expensive signing in the Premier League after an eye-watering €135 million (R2.5 billion) transfer from Bayer Leverkusen to Liverpool.
The 2024/25 Premier League champions have laid down a marker in their bid to defend their title, following the signing of Wirtz's Leverkusen teammate Jeremie Frimpong, while the Red have also agreed a fee with Bournemouth for Hungarian left-back Milos Kerkez.
While all eyes are on Wirtz following his big-money move, he is not the first player who made a switch to the Premier League at a hefty price.
Manchester United signed Paul Pogba in 2016 for a then-Premier League record fee of €105 million (R2.1 billion) when he re-joined the Red Devils from Juventus just four years after he joined the Old Lady.
Jack Grealish became the first English player and the first player in Premier League history to move for £100 million (R2.43 billion) when he joined Manchester City from Aston Villa in 2021.
Meanwhile, Harry Maguire broke the world record for a defender in 2019 when he moved to Man Utd for £80 million.
