The 27-year-old, who signed for the Brazilians from SuperSport United in January 2022, admitted that lifting the Champions League trophy was a promise he made directly to the club’s founder.
“Winning the title would mean a lot to me because when I signed in January 2022, I made a promise to the club president that we would win the CAF Champions League title,” Mokoena told Mamelodi Sundowns TV ahead of the second leg showdown in Egypt.
Sundowns head into the clash on Sunday night with the tie delicately poised at 1-1 following a dramatic ending to the first leg at Loftus Versfeld. The home side had taken a deserved lead and looked in control, but a last-minute lapse allowed Pyramids to snatch a crucial away goal that shifted the momentum.
“I don’t think Pyramids played against the Sundowns we knew last Saturday. I think we were nervous. In the second half, we came back better, but in the last minute we lost our focus and conceded a goal.”
Now, with the final 90 minutes of the campaign looming, the midfield enforcer believes it is time for the club to deliver on its long-standing goal.
“I think the time has come for us to win the Champions League for the club president and our fans,” Mokoena said. “I think everyone deserves the trophy because they always talk about it.”
