With Al Ahly having wrapped up the Egyptian League title, Riveiro is expected to be announced soon and will officially take charge of the team ahead of the Club World Cup.
Journalist Ahmed Shobeir reported that Riveiro allegedly made a shocking decision regarding his squad for the tournament, according to Sport El Watan.
Speaking on ON Sport FM, Shobeir said Riveiro is reportedly set to travel to the US with a smaller squad than anticipated.
"What I’ve learned is that José Rivero wants to take only 26 players with him to the Club World Cup," he said.
"I’m not sure whether the club will agree to that or what will ultimately happen."
While Riveiro can use more than 35 players for the tournament, he is apparently looking to reduce his squad size.
"He actually has the right to register more than 35 players for the tournament, but what I heard is that he’s not in favour of taking that many. He wants to reduce the squad to keep the players fully focused," he added.
The ex-goalkeeper was unsure whether the club's management would accept the former Orlando Pirates manager's request.

"Usually, a new coach’s requests are accepted, but we don’t know yet if the club will go along with this one. Still, we’re talking about a global event like the Club World Cup. I truly hope Al Ahly does well," he concluded.
