Mamelodi Sundowns chairman Tlhopane Motsepe on Monday afternoon announced the arrival of a new sporting director at the club.
The Siya crew reported two months ago that Flemming Berg, a guru in putting together the blueprint for youth development in Denmark, was expected to arrive at Chloorkop to take up the role.
Indications were that the 49-year-old would begin his tenure at the start of this month and fill the gap left void by Jose Roman Alexanko, who joined the Brazilians back in September 2019 but has since exited the role, although it is not clear when exactly he cut ties with Sundowns.
Alexanko, a former Barcelona player, is understood to have gone back to the Catalan outfit to be their academy manager.
Sundowns also previously had Erik Hamren as technical director between January 2018 to August that same year.
Motsepe stated the following as he was unveiling Berg at the club's headquarters.
"There are numerous reasons why we chose to bring Flemming to the Yellow Nation. One of the most important reasons is that he understands that Mamelodi Sundowns has a responsibility to its most important partner – our supporters. He understands that it is our responsibility to play entertaining, inspiring and winning football. The Sporting Director also understands that Mamelodi Sundowns is not just a football club, we are a South African footballing institution and that we have a duty to our country. Our duty is to make a meaningful contribution to South African football, to promote and develop young coaches and players; to make the game better, and above all, our duty is to provide the very best pool of South African footballers for our National Team to select."
