Rulani's Welcomed Maseko Headache

Rulani's Welcomed Maseko Headache

While he recovers from an injury that saw him miss out on Bafana Bafana's FIFA World Cup qualifiers, Thapelo Maseko has given his club coach Rulani Mokwena a lot to ponder about before domestic action resumes.

It is perhaps disappointing that injury put a damper on Maseko's incredible run of form.

The 20-year-old was imperious for Mamelodi Sundowns in their African Football League triumph, where he was rightfully named Player of the Tournament and Top Goalscorer.

There were initial doubts over Maseko's move to Sundowns from SuperSport United, particularly because there were European clubs keen on the speedster. However, it seems that Mokwena's call for patience with the player has yielded results.

Now, as he recovers from an unfortunate injury, Mokwena's biggest headache is which position to play Maseko when Sundowns return to domestic action.

"In my opinion, he can play four positions… He can be a right striker, a left striker and could probably play as a 10. He could probably also play like Thapelo Morena at the back. But I think a player with so many qualities and natural abilities needs a clearly defined role for him, and that's the job we have to do," Mokwena told the AFL Media about the player.

So far, Maseko has been deployed mainly as a left winger for Sundowns, as well as a striker in Peter Shalulile's absence.

With the Namibian having seemingly recovered from his injury, it remains to be seen where Sundowns deploy Maseko when they next face his former club, Matsatsantsa A Pitori on Wednesday 29 November.
