After Bongani Zungu recently rejoined Mamelodi Sundowns following a spell abroad, Soccer Laduma looks at other players who went back to the Tshwane giants on their return from Europe.
Zungu's signing was confirmed close to two weeks ago as he made a return to the club, six years after leaving for Portugal. Zungu is not the only player who made a return to Sundowns after a spell in Europe.
Former Bafana Bafana defender Matthew Booth left Sundowns in 2002 for a move to Russia, where he played Rostov, Krylia Sovetov, before returning to Chloorkop in 2009. He was at Sundowns for two years before making a move to Bidvest Wits.
Another player who rejoined Sundowns after playing abroad is former Bafana Bafana midfielder Bennet Mnguni. Like Booth, Mnguni made a move to Russian club Lokomotiv Moscow and is best remembered for closing down the legendary Zinedine Zidane in a UEFA Champions League match against Real Madrid. Mnguni made a return to Sundowns in 2006.
One of Sundowns' greatest strikers, Raphael Chukwu, left the club in 1999 for Italian side Bari. He returned to Sundowns in 2000, before moving to Turkey to play for Caykur Rizespor in 2003. The Nigerian had a third spell at Sundowns in 2004.
Zambian midfielder Gift Kampamba left Sundowns in 2000 for a move to Sweden and returned a year later.
Clement Mazibuko was loaned out by Sundowns to Ergotelis in 2005 and returned to Chloorkop afterwards.
