CWC Exposure Brings MLS Suitors For Sundowns Star

MIAMI GARDENS, FLORIDA - JUNE 25: German Cano #14 of Fluminense FC passes the ball while under pressure from Divine Lunga #29 of Mamelodi Sundowns FC during the FIFA Club World Cup

With the impressive showing of Mamelodi Sundowns in the ongoing FIFA Club World Cup, at least one of their players is believed to have attracted interest from an MLS side.

An insider monitoring the tournament has indicated that one Brazilians defender has caught the eye of an American club.

The insider added that Sundowns left-back Divine Lunga is the player who has attracted interest from Cincinnati FC of the MLS during the games in the USA. The same club has been linked with interest in Orlando Pirates' Relebohile Mofokeng

"I think it's because of his performance during the tournament. Apparently after the last game there were enquiries from Cincinnati FC officials about Divine (Lunga). They showed interest in him. What we don't know is whether it's for this season or not because the seasons run differently but they have shown interest in him," the insider told Soccer Laduma.

A confidant with insight into Sundowns' defensive planning stated that it won't be easy for the South African club to let the Zimbabwean international go ahead of the current season. This is because coach Miguel Cardoso is happy to use him in a key role. There are other excellent options in Aubrey Modiba, Asekho Tiwani, Terrence Mashego and the young Thato Sibiya.

"Oh, yes the club has received interest in him while at the Club World Cup but they are apparently believed not to be ready to let him go ahead of the new season as the head coach and the technical team are looking at him as the first choice left back for the season ahead. They have a planned squad and they apparently don't want to disturb it right at the start of the season. But they will weigh the interest first and see how serious it is before making the final decision," the second source revealed.

Lunga was in one of the Club World Cup teams of the week after his solid performance in the opening two games and the Zimbabwean is believed to have recently extended his stay at Sundowns with his initial contract coming to an end on 30 June.

Soccer Laduma contacted Sundowns for comment on the situation but there was no response at the time of publishing this story.
