What Triggered Focus On Youth At Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs head coach Arthur Zwane has revealed what motivates the club to put more emphasis on their youth structures, as their issue with other DStv Premiership sides continue.

Chiefs have been criticized by fans for not signing enough 'quality' players compared to the likes of Mamelodi Sundowns.

Despite their rebuilding process forcing Amakhosi to bring a number of new additions, there still remains dissatisfaction that the squad needs to be beefed up again for next season, after they ended in fifth place in the Premiership and without a trophy for eight seasons.

Zwane has revealed that they have challenges getting some players that they want from other Premiership sides, who are unwilling to sell to them and says one of the reasons they have been heavily focused on their development products is to avoid relying on the PSL market for players.

"We just have to find a way. One of the reasons we resorted to the development was because of that. We didn't want to rely more on what other teams can give us when we want those players," Zwane said in a press conference.

"We also wanted to help our youngsters from the development to get the opportunity to play, of which most of them when they were given the opportunity, I think they exerted themselves and will grow from there.

"Yes, it has been a bad season, a season that we didn't want to see us finish fifth but there were a lot of positives, more especially the youngsters coming, even though they were blowing hot and cold," he said.

The Soweto native coach went on and said that it's unfortunate they lost the core of the team throughout the season to injuries and they had throw these youngsters in at the deep end.

"It is simply because of the demands and as I said, it would have been nice if the core of the players that we have and had a plan for, that these are the ones who are gonna guide the youngsters, obviously the transition would be smooth," he said.

"And unfortunately we lost nearly 80 percent of the core, so now we had to rely on them and at some point they had to crack because of being inexperienced and the demands of the game as well," he added.
