Tovey Reveals Missing Piece Of The Puzzle At Chiefs

After Kaizer Chiefs addressed the shortcoming of coaches with the appointment of a carte blanche technical team and following a shaky start, former club captain Neil Tovey has revealed one element they still need to bring on board.

Chiefs have in the past been hiring coaches without them having the power to bring their own technical team and as a result, the backroom staff stayed longer at the club while the coaches moved in and out of the revolving door.

Changing coaches but keeping the same technical team was believed by many pundits, supporters and legends to be one of the main reasons the club could not win trophies again.

Amakhosi finally relented to make wholesale changes of their technical staff after allowing new head coach Nasreddine Nabi to come with his own assistants, Khalil Ben Youssef, Cedric Kaze, goalkeeper coach Ilves Mzoughi, analysts and Strength and Conditioning coach Safi Majdi.

Following a shaky start to the season, however, Tovey believes the club still needs legends to be part of the technical setup, to help with the induction of new players and preserving the culture of the Glamour Boys.

"They should be using players that have a culture with the club, because it's one thing recruiting, going and watching a decent player but it's another thing if that player has got the capability to play for Chiefs from a mental perspective," Tovey said on SoccerBeat YouTube Channel.

"Because maybe from a skills perspective he's got all the boxes ticked but when it comes to the size of the club, the mentality that needs to be explained and that is a huge area the club could really go into.

"For those players to have that environment around them talking to past players who have donned the jersey and donned it well and use their experience. Use their thought processes, have discussions with the likes Doc [Khumalo], myself. It's a huge aspect that the club could delve into from a technical aspect," the Bafana Bafana legend added.

Chiefs had the idea of forming a committee of club legends from the class of the 1970s, 80s, 90s and 2000s for them to have a voice late last year after they also invited them to celebrate the induction of Dr. Kaizer Motaung into the South Africa Hall of Fame.

However, the idea is seemingly yet to be formalized, although legends of Amakhosi have been kept together and active with the legends games in recent times.

Mamelodi Sundowns have a number of former players playing active roles in the senior team's decision-making processes, with former midfielder Esrom Nyandoro serving as Head of Scouting.
