Kaizer Chiefs & Orlando Pirates - Trophyless

Kaizer Chiefs & Orlando Pirates - Trophyless

As two of the biggest teams in South Africa, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates fans are not used to trophy droughts – but their current spell has seen the Soweto giants miss out on 19 trophies…

Check out eight teams who've won silverware since Chiefs/Pirates lifted a trophy in the gallery above!

Chiefs and Pirates have impressive historical records, winning numerous trophies over numerous decades as they set themselves up as giants of the South African game, but as the 2019/20 season comes to an end it's now almost five years since either team lifted a trophy.

The Glamour Boys last won silverware back in 2014/15 when they won a league and cup double which culminated in them lifting the Absa Premiership trophy on May 9 2015, a few months after Stuart Baxter had guided them to the MTN8 title.

For the Buccaneers it's been even longer, with May 2014 the last time that they were victorious, with captain, Happy Jele, being the only player from the starting XI that day that is still on the club's books.

To put the drought into perspective, Mamelodi Sundowns, Bidvest Wits, SuperSport United, Cape Town City, Free State Stars, TS Galaxy, Baroka FC and Ajax Cape Town have all won between one and six trophies since anyone in Soweto had a competitive trophy to celebrate, with Galaxy beating Chiefs last year to become the first non-top-flight side to lift the Nedbank Cup.

Chiefs look closest to bringing that drought to an end at present as they sit atop the league table with eight games to go, however Masandawana (in second) do have a game in hand and are just four points behind with a clash with Chiefs on the horizon.

That's if this season ever resumes at all given the Coronavirus outbreak.

Do you think Chiefs or Pirates can win a trophy in 2020?
