With Orlando Pirates struggling in front of goal, this week's Friday debate questions if loaned out striker Tshegofatso Mabasa should be recalled to ease the pressure on strikers at the club.
Mabasa is currently on loan to Moroka Swallows and is the joint top scorer in the Premiership with six goals, while Pirates strikers Zakhele Lepasa, Evidence Makgopa and Kermit Erasmus are behind him with league goals.
There have been some calls for the Buccaneers to recall Mabasa from his loan spell with the Dube Birds. Soccer Laduma spoke to two former Pirates players who have different opinions on the matter.
Andries Sebola - former Pirates striker
I've said it before that Pirates need to get another striker. I was a little disappointed when Tshegofatso was loaned out, but I think it would be a good idea to recall him. Upfront, you can see that Pirates are creating chances, but they are not converting them. As a striker, he is mobile and he is strong enough. He can finish. Evidence Makgopa is on and off and I would not say he is the best striker. Unfortunately, he does not finish those chances that they create for him. (Kermit) Erasmus, you can see that age is catching up with him a little bit, but he still has the experience. I still believe that it would be a good idea for Pirates to recall Mabasa. He is someone they need.
Bennett Chenene - former Pirates winger
To be honest, when a player is doing well when he is out on loan, I feel he should stay at that club. I will give you an example with Tlou (Segolela). He was doing well at Bloemfontein Celtic. But when he came back to Pirates, I don't think he was the same. I usually don't encourage players to go back, unless he (Mabasa) wants to go back to Pirates. If he wants to return to Pirates, it's up to him. But I am not happy with a player going back to a club that was not using him. Then when he performs, they want him back. I normally advise players not to go back. I think he should ask Swallows to buy him permanently from Pirates. I know he has a contract with Pirates, but it was not working. That's my opinion on the matter. That thing of going back to clubs after a loan spell has killed a lot of careers.
