No matter what the situation is at Kaizer Chiefs, actor Clement Maosa will remain loyal to the Soweto giants.
Soccer Laduma caught up with the Skeem Saam actor at an event in Johannesburg this week to talk about his love for Amakhosi.
What do you make of the season Kaizer Chiefs is having?
Here's the thing. In as much as we've had a bad season last season, I still have hope in the team and I can see that there is a little bit of a difference this season. I am happy to see Mfundo Vilakazi in the first team and I feel that if we can have more players from the development, I think it can make a huge difference in terms of the team as a whole. I feel like there is still hope and they can redeem themselves.
How hard was it to take that Soweto derby defeat to Orlando Pirates recently?
I don't know what to make of it. If you check, there is something about the derby. We start off so well and then we get hope. I am one person who tweets a lot. Within the first half, I will be tweeting and saying things like 'this is our day'. Come the second half, things just take a turn. I don't know what to make of it and I don't know what the problem is. But remember it's a game at the end of the day and, with a game, you never know. That's why we have predictions and things like that. It was difficult for someone like me who had already tweeted that this time we are winning it. But I did not take it so badly because I understood that it's a game. But it's also not the first time something like that happened, even though it was embarrassing going to work on Monday and hearing people saying 'we told you'.
How did you start supporting Kaizer Chiefs?
I grew up in a family of football fans. My father was a great supporter of Kaizer Chiefs from like back in the day, when they had the likes of Doctor Khumalo. He was a proper fan and I was very young. I did not have much interest in football until he took me to the stadium. I think it was 1997 or 1998. I remember going to the Soweto derby from Limpopo coming to Joburg for the first time. I was fascinated by the atmosphere. It's different when you are watching a game on TV and when you are there at the stadium because there were vuvuzelas and people were singing. The atmosphere was great. I think we lost that game. I can't remember exactly how. But I felt that Chiefs are the team to support. That's how it started. I am one person who is loyal. I have never changed and I won't change. I have been a Chiefs supporter through and through.
Do you have an all-time favourite Chiefs player?
There is Doctor Khumalo from back then. And then later on it was Itumeleng Khune. Even today, he is still a favourite of mine. His skills as a goalkeeper are out of this world. So far, I cannot compare him with anyone in terms of goalkeepers. Recently, I've found myself being a big fan of Mfundo Vilakazi. He is still starting, but he seems like he has a lot of potential.
Do you have a favourite moment as a Chiefs supporter?
Not really. I have a favourite moment with Bafana Bafana, which involves a Chiefs player. If you remember, Siphiwe Tshabalala scored the opening goal at the FIFA World Cup. It's a moment I will forever cherish. That's my favourite moment from a Chiefs player who was playing for Bafana Bafana.
