The story
Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana striker Zakhele Lepasa has taken to Pilates to improve his flexibility, agility and help prevent injuries.
Lepasa's foray into Pilates follows a frustrating 2024/25 season campaign in which he did not feature in any competitive matches.
At 28, the striker has endured a challenging period with muscle injuries, and this past season, an ankle injury sidelined him from first-team action.
Persistent injury issues coupled with increased competition for places upon his return to Mayfair have seen him slip further down the pecking order.
Under the tutelage of former Bucs coach José Riveiro, the likes of Tshegofatso Mabasa, Evidence Makgopa, and Boitumelo Radiopane further cemented their places as the club's strikers.
According to The Core by Balanced Body, Pilates may help Lepasa improve his flexibility and agility. Additionally, it promotes balanced muscle development, which can help prevent injuries.
Australia-based Muse Pilates shared a "Benefits of Pilates For Soccer Players" report last year, explaining how vital the low-impact exercise method can be to a footballer's flexibility.
"Soccer players need a wide range of motion to perform dynamic movements such as high kicks, quick turns and sprints. Limited flexibility can lead to muscle strains, joint stiffness and reduced overall performance.
"Improved flexibility helps prevent injuries and aids in faster recovery and better execution of skills. It ensures that your muscles and joints are prepared for the demands of the game, reducing the risk of overuse injuries and enhancing your agility," read parts of the report.
