The story
As long-serving captain at Orlando Pirates, Innocent Maela prepares to take a different direction in his football career, the Bafana Bafana international happily looked back on his journey at the club.
The 32-year-old defender made a rare appearance in Pirates' last league match of the season at home to Magesi, in what was his final match as a Buccaneer, with growing speculation that he is transitioning into a non-playing role at the club.
The match saw Maela bid an emotional farewell to supporters at Orlando Stadium, as he received a rousing standing ovation when he was substituted in the 67th minute – a heartwarming gesture from the Happy People.
In a video shared on the club's various social media pages, Maela spoke openly about what it’s been like to play for the Soweto giants.
"What a journey, I remember the first days I joined the academy, I would have never thought that I would one day be here where I am today," shared Maela.
"A journey of ups and downs, where I had to go on loan, but today, I am here. It's been special, I'm grateful for everything I have been able to achieve here, lifting trophies, I think I have six or seven trophies with the club, it’s been special," added the versatile defender.
Watch below as Maela also shares a message of thanks to the Pirates supporters for backing him throughout his time at the Soweto giants:
