For Sundowns' clash against Orlando Pirates in early February at the Orlando Stadium, an award-winning photographer has shared his experience of capturing the fans through analog photography.

Check it out!

What's the story?

Kasi Flavour 10's Kabelo Kungwane and award-winning photographer Themba Mbuyisa embarked on a film photography mission to eSgodini

Mbuyisa captured Pirates fans at the famous venue, and shared a short vlog of the experience, whole Kungwane took to IG to share the pictures.

Let's take a closer look at their work and why analog photography is important in football.

Captured in film

When Mamelodi Sundowns overcame the Buccaneers at the Orlando Stadium, 1-0, in early February, Mbuyisa was alongside the late Shakes Kungwane's son, Kabelo, capturing the game in a different light.

Mbuyisa and Kungwana snuck in an old school TLR camera into the stadium and captured some of most eccentric fans from the Buccaneers.

"We went to watch a game and photograph the energy eSgodini. We love Pirates and Sundowns fixture because both teams have quality player and the game is always open. There's no parking the bus and playing low block just entertainment from the first whistle. It's the best fixture in the league," said Kungwane on his IG caption with a gallery of photos captured on the day.

Mbuyisa shared the experience in a short vlog, capturing some of the more interesting characters you'd encounter a DStv Premiership match:

Mbuyisa's work in contemporary fashion photography has seen him work with GQ Magazine and luxury fashion brand MaXhosa, while Kungwane continues to push the Kasi Flavour 10 brand to new heights.

Film photography's importance in football

In the late 2010s, analog made a bit of a comeback and it's been spearheaded by curious creatives who are fascinated by how things were captured and listened to in the past.

Vinyl players and film cameras certainly have a place in contemporary media and the aforementioned creative minds recognise that.

In football, film photography allows people to engage with the sport in a more meaningful and emotional manner.

The patience it requires to be comfortable with this medium of photography and to consistently capture the right images isn't an easy task, especially with film's limitations.

As stated by Analog Football, which is a community built on helping young photographers to capture the sport in a unique way, film photography is the perfect tool for changing the way we look at sports.

Mbuyisa and Kungwane's work is not only important in immortalising modern South African football, but could also encourage other young photographers to attend games and capture the experience in a more meaningful way than they would on a digital device.
