The story
Former Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates star, Aubrey Ngoma, recently reflected on his professional football career during an appearance on Jabu Mahlangu's podcast. He discussed the time he was compared to the late John "Shoes" Moshoeu.
Ngoma was asked about what it was like to work alongside Benni McCarthy, whom he trained with briefly at Pirates and played under at City.
McCarthy once compared Ngoma to Kaizer Chiefs icon, Shoes. The compliment inspired Ngoma to believe in himself and improve his game.
"Imagine hearing that from Benni, being compared to Shoes. That can make or break you because now you have to try and live up to that expectation of playing like Shoes," said Ngoma on Mahlangu's "Diski Shandis Podcast."
"For me, I knew I wasn’t half the player Shoes was, but to be compared to him motivated me to know that I have something and that I should believe in myself. It motivated me to say, 'You have talent, the skills and potential,'" he added.

Ngoma announced his retirement earlier this year after nearly two seasons without a team, concluding an illustrious career during which he was known for his skill and pace on the pitch.
Ngoma had been without a club since parting ways with SuperSport United at the end of the 2022/23 Betway Premiership season.
Before his time at SuperSport, the left-footed winger played for several teams, including Mamelodi Sundowns, Cape Town City FC, Orlando Pirates, and AmaTuks.
His most successful years were at Cape Town City, where he played in over 100 matches, scoring 18 goals and providing 24 assists. This impressive performance earned him a high-profile move to Sundowns.
