Pitso Mosimane's side won 2-1 on the night, however the goal scored by their opponents saw it tied at 2-2 and the Congolese went through on the away goals rule.
Despite the defeat, Sundowns' CAF run is not over for 2016 just yet, with them now set to take on a team from the CCC for a spot in the group stages of Africa's second-tier continental competition.
The playoff round of the CCC will take place next month, with eight clubs from each competition – the CCL eight have already been confirmed – being drawn into their respective groups at a draw on May 24th.
