CAF Champions League Report: Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 AS Vita 20 April 2016

CAF Champions League   Result: Mamelodi Sundowns 2-1 AS Vita (2-2 on aggregate)   Date: 20 April 2016   Venue: Lucas Moripe Stadium   Mamelodi Sundowns missed out on a spot in the CAF Champions League group stages, despite securing a 2-1 win over AS Vita in the second leg.   Sundowns enjoyed most of the possession in the early stages but they were let down by their decision-making in final third.   The Brazilians should have opened the scoring in the 20th minute. Themba Zwane showed good skill to beat his marker, before picking out Leonardo Castro, who directed his effort wide at the near post.   Sundowns continued dictate the tempo of the game, but it was the visitors who took the lead in the 38th minute as Kule Mbombo squeezed the ball past Wayne Sandilands at the near post.   However, the hosts were handed a lifeline in the 40th minute when Castro was brought down in the box. Thabo Nthethe stepped up and converted the spot-kick to level matters on the night.   Pitso Mosimane opted to re-shuffle the pack just before the break, and introduced Teko Modise for Themba Zwane, as he looked for more creativity from the middle of the park.   The second half continued in the same fashion as the first, but Vita almost restored their lead in the 60th minute as Mbombo rattled the crossbar from close range, after evading Wayne Arendse with ease.   The Brazilians were presented with a couple chances just a few moments later but Castro and Billiat failed to take advantage of good headed chances in the box.   However, Sundowns took the lead in the 74th minute, as Nthethe threaded a pass for Tebogo Langerman, who calmly slotted under Lukong to make it 2-2 on aggregate.   The home side pushed for another goal, as Mosimane threw on Cuthbert Malajila for the final few minutes, while Billiat and Mbekile squandered two good chances in the closing stages of the match, as Vita held on for the result.   The Brazilians will now play in the CAF Confederation Cup, as Vita progress to the group stage phase of the Champions League on the away goals rule.   Here's how they lined up:   Sundowns: 40 Sandilands, 16 Mphahlele, 4 Langerman, 2 Nthethe, 6 Arendse, 8 Kekana, 29 Bangaly (Mbekile 54'), 18 Zwane (Modise 42'), 7 Dolly, 20 Billiat, 25 Castro (Malajila 86')   AS Vita: 16. Lukong, 20. Bafola, 15. Botuli, 26. Makwekwe, 13. Mutambala, 8. Traore, 3. Ikanga (Ngonda 71'), 22. Wango, 18. Batezadio (Lusadisu 82'), 9. Kule, 19. Morisson
