Reports: Danny Jordaan Arrested!

Reports: Danny Jordaan Arrested!

South African football has been shaken following reports that SAFA football governing body president Danny Jordaan has been arrested.

Jordaan is facing charges of fraud and theft amounting to R1.3 million, and he is due to appear in the Palm Ridge Magistrate's court.

It's understood that Jordaan filed papers in the Johannesburg high court to seek an interdict of his arrest and prosecution. The Hawks have alleged that Jordaan used SAFA's resources for personal gain between 2014 and 2018, including hiring a private security company for personal protection, as well as a public relations company allegedly without authorisation.

To add to this, Jordaan allegedly violated the SAFA statutes prejudicing the organisation to the loss of R1.3 million paid to public relations company, Grit Communications, to influence the media to push a positive narrative about the football governing body. This was allegedly done to portray a good image of himself due to allegations against him.

Earlier this year, in March, the Hawks raided the offices at SAFA to gather information related to contracts that Jordaan signed with Grit Communications and Badger Security. These were flagged by whistle blowers within the organisation as irregular.

In his affidavit, which was submitted in efforts to block his arrest, Jordaan communicated that Grit Communications was appointed to protect 'the good name and reputation of SAFA'. The R1.3 million is alleged to have been paid over a period of three years, which was accounted for in the football governing body's financial statements.

Jordaan would want the court to block his arrest pending a review application. He would also like the court to instruct the Hawks to return information and documents confiscated during its raid back in March, as well as destroy all copies of documents it obtained, both physical and electronic.
