Varsity Football Report: NWU 6-0 UCT 11 August 2014

NWU Scoring A Goal
NWU handed winless UCT a 6-0 drubbing in Mafikeng to move to the top of the Varsity Football standings. It was the third consecutive home victory for NWU who are yet to be beaten this season, whilst UCT still have just one log point to show for their efforts after four matches. Striker Tshenolo Machwisa grabbed a hat-trick as the main beneficiary of an astounding game from playmaker and FNB Man of the Match Orebotse Mongae. The home side started with a bang as Thatohatsi Santos guided the opening goal home after a great run down the left from Mongae. They did not have to wait long for their second as Tshenolo Machwisa swept the ball into the goal to make it 2-0 inside the opening five minutes after the UCT defence had been caught napping again. The action continued as Byron Donaldson found some space in the NWU penalty area, but his header flashed over the crossbar. The drama did not end there as both teams were reduced to 10 men when the referee brandished two reds cards. NWU defender Kyle Amon was shown his for a reckless challenge, whilst UCT striker Louis-Romain Moussi Sopp saw red for his reaction. However, that did not stop the goals as NWU made it 3-0, with Machiswa finishing another that was created by a impressive run by Mongae. UCT had a few promising moments of their own on attack, but could not find the finishing touch and went into half-time trailing 3-0 after an intense first half. It was a long way back for the visitors who had no option but to come out all guns blazing in the second half but they battled to penetrate the organised NWU defence. Instead it would be the home side to score next, as Mongae set up another goal, with Matsobane Matsi burying the ball in the back of the net. The goals kept coming as Machwisa secured his hat-trick with a composed finish to pile the pain on UCT who were down and out at 5-0 down. The final nail in UCT's coffin came from NWU replacement Kagiso Modimeong who cut inside and fired the ball into the bottom left corner from outside the box to make it 6-0.
