Top 50 World Cup Moments: Senegal Stuns Defending Champion France

We are down to only 20 days until start of the World Cup in Brazil and continue our Top 50 World Cup moments – today number 20: Senegal Stun World Champions France.

The world was shocked in 2002 when defending World Cup winners, France, were defeated 1-0 by Senegal in the opening game of the tournament in South Korea.

A 30th-minute strike by Pape Bouba Diop, the first goal of the tournament, put Senegal ahead, and the Lions of Teranga never looked back.

Though Zinedine Zidane, who was the world's most expensive player at the time, was injured, France still boasted the likes of Thierry Henry, Patrick Vieira, Djibril Cisse and David Trezeguet in its starting XI.

Henry and Trezeguet glanced shots off the post and the crossbar in the opening 20 minutes, while the fluid passing of El Hadji Diouf kept Senegal in a threatening position as well.

It was a Diouf cross that set up Bouba Diop's strike, and nine saves from Senegal keeper, Tony Sylva, ensured that the lone goal was the deciding factor in the game.

France continued to struggle, dropping out of Group A along with Uruguay. Senegal went through to the next round, second behind Denmark in the group.

Though Brazil went on to be crowned victorious that year, Senegal's opening-day victory will always be remembered as one of the most incredible moments in World Cup history.
