The Brazil playmaker joined the Catalan giants in 2003 and won six trophies during his five years at the Camp Nou.
However, he joined Serie A giants AC Milan in 2008 because he wanted to follow the path taken by his former coach and Rossoneri legend Frank Rijkaard.
"It was easy – it was time to go," Ronaldinho told FourFourTwo.
"I wanted to follow in the footsteps of (Frank) Rijkaard, ?who was my coach and said great things about AC Milan.
"I had other options, but I wanted to play for AC Milan."
The 35-year-old also revealed why he left Milan to return to Brazil in 2011, despite only being 31 at the time.
"I wanted to come back to Brazil to live in Rio. I didn't want to come back just to retire – I wanted to make an impact," he added.
"And Flamengo had a good plan for me. That was key for me. That's why I didn't go straight to Gremio, my boyhood team."
