UEFA Nations League Report: Spain v Ukraine 06 September 2020

Result: Spain 4-0 Ukraine

Date: 06 September 2020

Venue: Estadio Alfredo Di Stéfano

Spain got their first win of the UEFA Nations League campaign after thumping Ukraine 4-0, with Sergio Ramos and African-born winger Ansu Fati playing starring roles.

La Roja manager Luis Enrique made wholesale changes to the side that earned a last-gasp draw against Germany, with the likes of Sergio Busquets, Rodrigo Moreno and Daniel Carvajal dropping to the bench while Fati was handed his first start.

Fati made his presence felt early as he won his side a penalty after just three minutes, which Spain had a dream start as Ramos dispatched into the bottom corner.

The hosts were threatening to double their lead with every attack as Fati came very close in the 25th minute with an over-head kick from close range that was blocked off the line by Mykola Matvyenko.

Ramos eventually bagged his and La Roja's second goal four minutes later with a looping header at the back post after a brilliant cross by Daniel Olmo.

Fati extended the lead for Enrique's charges just after the half-hour mark with a curling strike that came off the inside of the far post and became the Spain's youngest ever scorer.

Bogdan Mykhaylichenko had Ukraine's best chance just before the break after bursting through on goal but his shot was smothered by goalkeeper David De Gea as Spain went to the break with a commanding three-goal lead.

Spain had a slow start in the second stanza but once they got their rhythm back, Gerard Moreno found the back of the net just after the hour-mark with a strike past Pyatov inside the six-yard box but his goal was disallowed for offside.

While Andriy Shevchenko's struggled to carve out serious openings, Oscar Rodriguez was unlucky not to add his name to the scoresheet in the last 13 minutes with a dipping strike that was tipped over the bar by Pyatov.

However, late substitute Ferran Torres rounded off the scoring for Spain in the last six minutes with a first-time shot to claim his first international goal in his second appearance.
