Result: England 2-1 Belgium
Date: 11 October 2020
Venue: Wembley Stadium
England secured a crucial 2-1 come-from-behind victory over Belgium at Wembley Stadium on Sunday to go top of UEFA Nations League A Group 2.
Belgium were unlucky not to break the deadlock when Yannick Carrasco's strike was ruled out for offside in the 10th minute. But the visitors would take the lead five minutes later when Erick Dier slid in uneccessarily in the box to upend Romelu Lukaku, who dusted himself off and dispatched the penalty past Jordan Pickford in the England goal.
Soon after, Marcus Rashford gave the ball away needlessly straight to Kevin de Bruyne, who slightly scuffed his effort but Pickford still had to be alert to make the save as England were let off the hook.
But the hosts were back in it five minutes before the interval. Belgium defender Thomas Meunier was guilty of pulling back Jordan Henderson in the box from a Kieran Trippier corner. Rashford stepped up and slotted the ball in to the right-hand corner.
Soon after, Lukaku did well to hold up play and feed in Carrasco with the back heel but the Atletico Madrid man dragged his effort slightly wide of the left-hand upright from the right-hand side.
In the 64th minute, a chance fell in the area to the feet of Mason Mount, who cut in on his right foot and attemped to whip a shot towards the top right corner. His effort was deflected by Toby Alderweireld and looped over Simon Mignolet into the back of the net.
Eight minutes later, De Bruyne produced a moment of magic with a wonderfully angled and weighted pass with the outside of his foot for Carrasco, who tried to finesse the ball past Pickford but once again it went the wrong side of the post.
Rashford could have killed the game off with five minutes to go after exchanging multiple passes down the left wing with Declan Rice only for his effort to sail just over the bar but it mattered not as the Three Lions came away with the three points.
