UEFA Champions League
Result: Club Brugge 0-0 Galatasaray
Date: 18 September 2019
Venue: Jan Breydelstadion
There was no UEFA Champions League debut for Percy Tau on Wednesday, as the Bafana Bafana star was an unused substitute in Club Brugge's goalless draw with Galatasaray.
Tau was an unused substitute at the weekend in the Brugge derby, and was once again named on the bench for the Champions League opener. Galatasary, meanwhile, called on former AS Monaco striker Radamel Falcao, who was joined in the attack by Ryan Babel and Sofiane Feghouli. The hosts carved out an early opening when Ruud Vormer skipped past a defender before picking out Emmanuel Bonaventure Dennis, who sent his header wide of the mark at the far post on eight minutes. Galatasaray had to wait until the 30th minute for their first opening after the half-hour mark as Babel forced Simon Mignolet into a fine save, before Federico Ricca rattled the woodwork at the other end four minutes later. It was more of the same in the second half as Brugge managed to create a couple more openings but Galatasaray shot-stopper Muslera dd well to deny Dennis and Okereke. With time running out for both sides, changes arrived after the hour mark as David Okereke made way for Lois Openda while the visitors threw on Emre Mor for Mario Lemina. Galatasaray nearly secured the win with eight minutes remaining but Yuto Nagatomo's effort from the edge of the box sailed winches wide of the upright. However, there was to be no Champions League debut for Tau as defensive midfielder Éder Álvarez Balanta was brought on instead as the encounter finished goalless.
