Bayern Munich were left stunned, as they suffered a shock 3-2 defeat to FC Rostov in their UEFA Champions League tie on Wednesday evening.

The Bavarians were without the services of Manuel Neuer, who picked up an calf, handing a start to Sven Ulreich.

Bayern nearly broke the deadlock after 23 minutes, but Dzhanaev produced a fine save to keep out Holger Badstuber's towering header.

The visitors eventually broke the deadlock in the 26th minute when Renato Sanches's shot was deflected into the path of Douglas Costa, who fired the ball into the roof of the net.

Rostov leveled matters just before the halftime break, as Sardar Azmoun skipped past Jermoe Boateng, before curling the ball beyond Ulreich at the far post.

The home side were awarded a penalty in the 49 minutes as Boateng was adjudged to have handled the ball. Dmitry Poloz stepped up and converted the spot-kick.

Rostov then restored their lead in the 66th minute when Noboa curled home a sublime free-kick to the far post, 3-2.

Carlo Ancelotti threw on Thomas Muller for the final 20 minuets, but the Bundesliga champions could not carve out another opening, as Rostov held on to claim a vital three points.
