The home side went into the second leg with a one-goal advantage, having beaten Spurs 1-0 in London in the first fixture.

Ajax then all but believed their spot in the final in Madrid was booked as they went into the half-time break leading 2-0 on Wednesday night, only for Lucas Moura to score a second-half hat-trick to turn the tie on its head.

Casillas on Zidane

Three away goals for the Lilywhites sent Mauricio Pochettino's side through in what was yet another historic Champions League night, one that 19-year-old Ajax skipper De Ligt was left shattered by.

"When you see the whole game, we didn't deserve to be knocked out," he told Veronica.

"We barely gave anything away in first half, but we're out anyway. Incredible.

"It's a dream getting crushed. I would have loved to play the final, but it's not happening.

"I'm getting goosebumps from the way our fans cheered for us (after the final whistle). It's hard to say right now, but we have to move on.

"We still have to play two matches to win the title. That's most important now."
