With senior figures such as Marcelo Brozovic, Milan Skriniar and Samir Handanovic having all departed the Nerazzurri this off-season, Argentine sensation Lautaro Martinez has been bestowed the honour of wearing the armband for the Italian giants.
The pacey marksman has grown into a prominent role at the club over the past five years, helping them to add more silverware to their trophy cabinet, with the 25-year-old having contributed to Inter's 2020/21 Serie A triumph, while adding two Coppa Italias and two Supercoppa Italianas to his CV.
His strike partner for much of this time was Belgium's all-time top goalscorer Lukaku. According to Transfermarkt, the pair combined for 25 goals during the 109 matches they played together.
Earlier in this transfer window, the Antwerp native was heavily linked with a permanent return to Milan, but after it emerged that he was also in talks with Inter's bitter rivals Juventus over a possible move to the Allianz Stadium, the 19-time Scudetto winners broke off negotiations with Lukaku.
Martinez has now revealed his disappointment at the Belgian's behaviour given what they had been through together at Inter.
"I was disappointed, it's the truth," the 2022 FIFA World Cup winner told Gazzetta dello Sport.
"I also tried to call him in those days of chaos, he never answered me, the same he did with my other companions.
"After so many years together, after so many things lived together, I was disappointed.
