The Golden Shoe is awarded to the leading goalscorer across every top division from every European league. The goals scored across the European leagues work on a points system, with goals scored in the top five leagues counting for more.
Messi, who turned 32 earlier this year, struck 36 times in LaLiga in the 2018/19 campaign, three more than his closest competitor Kylian Mbappe, who scored 33 goals in Ligue 1 in the previous campaign.
The Argentine has now won the award on six occasions, two more than eternal rival Ronaldo, who, after picking up the accolade following the 2014/15 campaign, claimed the Golden Shoe is the best award for a goalscorer to win.

In 2015, the then Los Blancos forward spoke of his love for the accolade in an interview with De Telegraaf, as recalled by GiveMeSport recently.
"The competition for the Golden Shoe also comes from other leagues," he said.
"I really love this award. It is the best award out there for me.
"Others can pick you as the best player, but an attacker's job is to make goals and I love that. I cannot deny that I love scoring goals."
At the time of these remarks, Ronaldo had just come off the back of winning his fourth Golden Shoe, which Messi had only won three times then.

GiveMeSport pointed out that the Portuguese international's comments came at a time when Messi was leading 4-3 on Ballons d'Or wins, an award they have both since won on five occasions.
