The Argentine took the armband for the first time as first-choice captain of the club after the departure of Andres Iniesta as Barcelona defeated Sevilla 2-1 in the Supercopa de Espana.
After the game, Messi lifted his first trophy as captain, and the 33rd overall in career. In doing so, he overtook the tally of previous joint-record holder Iniesta, who had claimed 32 titles before leaving the Catalan giants.
In fact, Sunday's Supercopa triumph was the first piece of silverware Messi won without Iniesta as a teammate, with the duo previously claiming their 32 titles together.
