The Scotland international scored some important goals for United last season, but has now made way to free up the club's finances.
Ten Hag was reportedly eager to hang on to McTominay, who came through United's academy to represent the senior team on 255 occasions.
The midfielder has now joined forces with former Premier League manager Antonio Conte in Naples, after spending 22 years on United's books.
McTominay joined the Red Devils' youth set-up in 2002 before breaking into the senior ranks under Jose Mourinho in 2017.
