For the first time since the award’s inception, the Spanish top flight’s best African player award, now known as the LALIGA Sporty MVP award, has a back-to-back winner, as the Basque-born Williams was awarded the title again.
After narrowly missing out on UEFA Champions League qualification last season, Bilbao comfortably secured their place in European football’s premier club competition during the 2024/25 campaign — and a large part of that success was due to the 30-year-old’s presence on the right flank.
This past LALIGA season, the Black Stars attacker scored six goals and provided eight assists in the 35 matches he played in the league. With his boyhood club bringing Champions League football back to San Mamés for the first time since the 2014/15 season, it was enough to retain the Sporty MVP title.
Present at the announcement of the award winner in Johannesburg, South Africa, was former Barcelona midfielder Song.

The 37-year-old amassed a total of 39 appearances for the Blaugrana in Spanish football’s top division during the two seasons he spent at Camp Nou. On his fellow African winning such an award, he said at the press briefing that Soccer Laduma was present for:
“I’m so happy for Williams because he’s one of the African players that has been doing very well in LALIGA for many years, and that shows the young players that they can have an opportunity to be there and to be part of a great award, to dream to be African Player of the Year in a top league like LALIGA.”
