Instead of cashing in on Mbappe, Paris Saint-Germain could risk losing him on a free transfer at the end of the season after they did not respond to Real's reported final offer of €197 million (R3.3 billion) hours before the transfer window snapped shut.
The 22-year-old superstar has snubbed offer after offer of an extension from the Ligue 1 giants, but the Parisians are not giving up hope and will continue to try to tie him down to a new deal.
Barcelona defender Pique has now seemingly thrown salt on the wounds of his club's fierce rivals for their failure to get their hands on the 2018 FIFA World Cup-winning forward.
The Barca captain seemingly trolled the Madrid press, suggesting they were too quick to assume the transfer was done and dusted.
After the transfer did not go through, Pique took to social media to post an image of a Marca article with the caption "El 7", seemingly to point out that Mbappe has not gone anywhere as that is the shirt number he wears in France.
In the Marca article in question, the publication had mulled over what shirt number Mbappe should get at Los Blancos.
