Morocco Boss Makes Bold AFCON Prediction

After being eliminated by South Africa at the previous edition of the Africa Cup of Nations, Morocco’s head coach has made a bold prediction for the next tournament, which they are set to host.

The Atlas Lions will host the 25th edition of Africa’s biggest football tournament later this year, playing on home soil in front of their passionate supporters.

The North African giants have remained the highest-ranked African team in the world since their historic run at the 2022 FIFA World Cup. However, when many expected them to follow that up with a continental triumph in Ivory Coast earlier this year, they stumbled in the Round of 16 against Hugo Broos’ South Africa.

Since then, Morocco have gone unbeaten, and head coach Walid Regragui is now confident that his side will lift the Africa Cup of Nations trophy for only the second time in their history.

“I promised you that we would win the AFCON, and I still keep my promise. I went through the same experience with Wydad, and there was doubt surrounding the club’s ability to win the league and CAF Champions League double,” he said, as per AfricaSoccer.com.

“I have self-confidence and the support of the players, so there is no worry or doubt, and I love this kind of challenge.
“It was expected that the performance would be somewhat shaken due to the changes I made, but with the return of the main players, everything will improve.”

The former Wydad Athletic Club boss has recently come under fire for some of the team’s performances, but he claims to be unfazed — even declaring himself the greatest head coach in Morocco’s history.

“You can’t ask me to perform according to the results every time. The numbers speak for themselves. After the Qatar World Cup, I have once again become the best coach in the history of Moroccan football, with 12 consecutive victories,” Regragui added.

“I think we scored 41 goals, at a rate of more than 3 goals per game. Isn’t this proof that I am an attacking coach?”
