City coach Pep Guardiola made nine changes from the FA Cup win over Plymouth Argyle seven days ago, as Phil Foden and Bernardo Silva were the only players to keep their spot in the starting line-up.
Forest came into the clash with just one win in their last five league encounters, while returned to winning ways last week with a victory over Tottenham Hotspur.
Guardiola's charges enjoyed more of the ball in the early stages as they carved out a couple chances in the opening 20 minutes, with Erling Haaland and Nico Gonzalez going close with their respective efforts.
That proved to be the trend for the remainder of the first half, although the home side were unable to carve out any serious openings in the final third on the counter attack.
Forest did have to wait until the 68th minute for their first real opening of the game as Callum Hudson-Odoi cut in from the left flank and unleashed a powerful strike that forced that forced goalkeeper Ederson into a fine save.
Guardiola responded with a double change soon after as Foden and Savinho made way for Omar Marmoush and Kevin de Bruyne as they went in search of the opening goal.
However, it was Forest who got the breakthrough in the 83rd minute Hudson-Odoi latched onto a long pass from Morgan Gibbs-White before surging into the box and firing in at Ederson's near post.
The win sees Forest cement third place, four points ahead of fourth-place City.
