Bafana Close In On Major World Record

Bafana Close In On Major World Record

South Africa are one of the most in-form teams in world football following their recent exploits, with Bafana Bafana currently holding one of the best unbeaten records on the planet.

This past weekend, Hugo Broos' charges secured yet another victory in FIFA World Cup qualification against Lesotho as they moved to the top of Group C. At the beginning of 2024, Bafana finished third at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations, and the nation has seemingly taken over that momentum ever since.

Since that bronze medal performance in Ivory Coast, the 1996 African champions have qualified for the 2025 edition of the continental showpiece, and following their recent win over Likuena, they are in pole position to make it to the global spectacle set to be held in the United States of America, Mexico, and Canada next year.

Their win over their Southern African neighbours was their 17th successive match where they have failed to suffer defeat, according to Transfermarkt. The last loss the nation suffered was at the previous AFCON, when Nigeria secured a 4-2 penalty shootout victory.

Since then, they have been in formidable form, with only European champions Spain, who are in second place, going 18 matches unbeaten, and Senegal, who are first with 19 matches without a loss, bettering their astonishing record.

During that time, they have played some formidable opposition such as Morocco and Nigeria, and with potentially a World Cup to play, the confidence attained from this run will likely go a long way.
