Six SA Stars Who Played In Norway

With Samukelo Kabini recently completing his move to Norwegian giants Molde, Soccer Laduma highlights six other South African stars who plied their trade in the Eliteserien.

In the space of two years, the young defender has gone from being an Orlando Pirates academy player to becoming the latest prospect to secure a move to a major European club in Molde. They are only one of two sides from that region of Scandinavia to have played in the UEFA Champions League and have given career starts to players such as Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Erling Haaland.

While the Eliteserien has proved a breeding ground for many top European talents, a few Bafana Bafana stars have also illustrated their talents in the Norwegian top flight. Perhaps the most notable star to play in the league is MacBeth Sibaya.

While the defensive midfielder played the majority of his career in Russia with Rubin Kazan, the 62-capped international got his start in Europe with the only other Norwegian side not named Molde to play in the Champions League, Rosenborg. The Durban native only made six appearances for the side before making his way to Kazan, however.

Of the South Africans who have played in Norway, he featured the least, while the player who played the most is former goalkeeper Emile Baron. The Capetonian left Hellenic in 1999 and would spend five years with Lillestrøm, where he made 114 appearances for the club before returning to the Premier Soccer League to play for Kaizer Chiefs.

While Baron only played for one club in the Eliteserien, there was another former Kaizer Chiefs star who played for multiple sides in the league. Toni Nhleko played for Brann, Viking, and Sandefjord during his career, accumulating 47 appearances in the top flight for the aforementioned clubs.
