Belgium Star Hits Back At De Bruyne And Hazard With 'Too Old' Comment

Belgium Star Hits Back At De Bruyne And Hazard With 'Too Old' Comment

Eden Hazard and Jan Vertonghen

A Belgium veteran has clapped back at teammates Kevin De Bruyne and Eden Hazard after the duo accused the team's defence of being too old.

Report: Joao Felix Makes Decision On Atletico Future

On Sunday afternoon, Belgium, for the first time in 24 years, lost a FIFA World Cup group-stage game when they were defeated 2-0 by Morocco in their Group F encounter.

After two uninspiring World Cup performances, the Red Devils now face the real possibility of exiting the tournament early as they are currently third in their group.

With what is supposed to be their "golden generation", Belgium are on the brink of a major tournament disappointment, with star playmaker De Bruyne attributing their lacklustre display against Canada to an ageing squad, while ex-Chelsea talisman Hazard had a similar analysis, claiming that their defence was also "too old" and that they lacked the required pace.

After the western Europeans failed to find the back of the net against the Atlas Lions on Sunday, Jan Vertonghen, who is the country's most capped player and a member of the team's defence, hit back at Hazard and De Bruyne, suggesting that maybe the team's attack was also reaching its end.

"I guess we attack badly because we are also too old up front," the ex-Tottenham Hotspur central defender told reporters after the game, as per Goal.

"We didn't create enough chances. We conceded the same goal twice at the near post."

Ronaldo Offered Big Money To Leave Europe

Next for Roberto Martinez's men is a titanic tussle with 2018 FIFA World Cup runners-up Croatia. A win would all but secure their passage to the round of 16 but with the Croats coming off an emphatic victory over Canada, it remains to be seen if Belgium will rise to the occasion.
