Earlier this week, the Red Castle boss was involved in a car accident while en route to a shopping mall. With him in the taxi were team doctor Abdel Razzaq Hefti and executives Ali Al-Amari and Youssef Al-Dabbagh.
It is believed that no serious injuries were sustained by Benhachem or his colleagues, but all were hospitalised as a precautionary measure.
He has since been discharged after being declared fit, but remains under close medical supervision at the team’s residence. He is currently awaiting confirmation from the club’s medical team before resuming his duties as first-team coach.
As a result of the accident, the Moroccan tactician was unable to speak to the media ahead of Wydad’s final FIFA Club World Cup group stage clash against Al Ain. Those responsibilities were taken on by his assistant, Brahim Nakach, who, along with Abdessamad Ouarrad, also oversaw the final training session before the match against the Emirati side.
However, according to WinWin, Benhachem has pleaded with the club’s hierarchy to allow him to be in the dugout for the upcoming clash. While the team has managed to score one goal at the tournament so far, they are yet to register a win — and a victory at the competition would be lucrative, with each group stage win earning clubs $2 million (R35.4 million).
