Masandawana was drawn in Group F alongside Dortmund, Korean side Ulsan HD, and Brazilian outfit Fluminense.
While Borussia Dortmund may be considered the pre-tournament group favourites, Sundowns will prove to be formidable opponents for Niko Kovac's side.
The two teams will meet in their second group stage match on Saturday 21 June. With the tournament just days away from kicking off, Middendorp revealed the threat Bafana ba Style carries going into the tournament, according to Bild.
"The record number of championships reflects their consistency, professionalism, and ambition," Middendorp said.
"Their style of play is characterized by technical strength, tactical intelligence, and an attacking spirit. All of this represents the very entertaining brand of football they play," he added.
The German coach claimed Dortmund will be facing a 'very serious opponent'.
"Whether it's the title, structure, or style of play—Mamelodi Sundowns stands for excellence not only in South Africa, but throughout the entire African football landscape," he said.

Adding: "It's striking that Mamelodi relies heavily on developing young talent from their own country. 85 percent of the professional squad consists of South Africans."
