The story
After the PUMA x KidSuper collection was launched on Monday, the creative mind behind the collection spoke openly about his designs for Mamelodi Sundowns' Club World Cup gear.
KidSuper's collection with PUMA for this global club showpiece is a seamless blend of football, fashion, and art, which brings hand-drawn graphics, watercolour palettes, and club-inspired designs to the pitch and off it.
Colm Dillane designed fresh kits and lifestyle apparel for not only Mamelodi Sundowns, but also Manchester City, Borussia Dortmund, Al-Hilal, FC Salzburg, Palmeiras, and Monterrey.
When asked about his influences in approaching Sundowns' part of the collection, Dillane told Masandawana's Pitchside Podcast that it’s been his mission to merge his love for football with his passion and career in fashion.
"I grew up playing soccer, and when I started doing fashion, I always tried to include soccer as much as I could. So, I begged PUMA, let's do boots, and luckily, after five years of working with PUMA, they let me design some jerseys.
"It's been amazing because it's seven different clubs from seven different places around the world. It's funny because when I asked the models which jersey is their favourite, they rated the Sundowns one the highest," shared Dillane in his chat with Teko Modise and Hlompho Kekana.
In further explaining the themes of his designs for Sundowns' home and away kits for the tournament, the New York-born and bred designer wanted the club's name and its township roots to be well represented.
"So obviously, you guys are Sundowns, so we wanted a giant sun that's setting to be displayed, and it features an abstract painting of the townships," added the US designer, who has visited South Africa three times.
As mentioned by PUMA after releasing the collection, in the Sundowns jersey, the Tshwane evening sky offers a unique beauty, artfully blending warm, sunlit tones with cooler shades to reflect the club's distinctive style.
The design also embodies the rhythm, energy, and joy of Sundowns football, locally known as "shoeshine and piano."
