Southgate Makes New Admission About England Future

Gareth Southgate has given a fresh update on his future as England manager following their 2024 UEFA European Championship final loss.

The 53-year-old tactician was once again unable lead the Three Lions to major tournament honours after his side lost 2-1 to Spain at the Olympiastadion Berlin on Sunday.

The defeat saw England become the first side in the competition's history to lose successive finals, having lost to Italy in 2021 too.

Southgate's contract is set to expire at the end of the year, and prior to the commencement of the latest EUROs, the Watford native admitted that he would probably not stay in the position should his side fail to win the tournament.

The question of whether or not will leave the role was posed to him by ITV shortly after the final, to which he responded: "I don't think now is a good time to make a decision like that. I need to talk to the right people. It's not for now."

Southgate was pressed on the matter again in a post-match press conference.

"Look, I totally understand the question and understand that you need to ask it, but I need to have those conversations with important people behind the scenes. I'm obviously not going to discuss that publicly first," he said.

"Without a doubt, England have got some fabulous young players and even the young ones now have got a lot of experience of tournaments. Many of this squad are going to be in two, four, six, eight years' time.

"We have now been consistently back in the matches that matter, but it's the last step that we haven't been able to do."
