The Nigerian striker underwent urgent surgery for an abdominal injury he sustained when he collided with the goalpost during his side's 2-2 draw against Leicester City, Daily Mail reported.
He was subsequently placed in 'an induced coma' as it was revealed the nature of the injury could be 'life-threatening' in some cases.
In a statement, Forest confirmed that the initial surgery had been a success and he had been recovering well before the decision was made to place him in a coma.
"The seriousness of his injury is a powerful reminder of the physical risks in the game, and why a player’s health and well-being must always come first," the club said.
The club also stated that owner Evangelos Marinakis was reportedly upset over the situation surrounding the former Liverpool player and not with manager Nuno Espirito Santo.
"The truth of the matter is there was no confrontation, with Nuno or with others, either on the pitch or inside the stadium," the club said.
"There was only shared frustration between all of us that the medical team should never have allowed the player to continue."
The statement added that the well-being of the staff would always come first.
