Manchester United have, in recent seasons, spent some ridiculous money in acquiring top players for their midfield, so today we take a closer look at the 10 most expensive midfielders the Red Devils have purchased.

According to Transfermarkt, Spanish international Juan Mata is United's most expensive midfielder ever. The former Chelsea star cost the club €44.7 million (R758 million) in 2013.
In second place is former Argentina and Lazio playmaker Juan Sebastian Veron. The Argentine cost the club €42.6 million (R722 million).
Third spot goes to Ander Herrera; the Spaniard joined the club last season for €36 million (R610 million) and has been fighting ever since to become a first-team regular.
Dutchman Memphis Depay and Frenchman Morgan Schneiderlin are the two stars who find themselves in fourth and fifth positions. Schneiderlin cost United €35 million (R593 million), while Depay was bought for €34 million (R576 million).
Tied for sixth place is Belgian Marouane Fellaini and Brazilian middle man Anderson. The pair cost the Old Trafford side €32 million (R542 million) each.
In eighth spot is Manchester United stalwart Michael Carrick. The England international arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006 and cost Sir Alex Ferguson €27 million (R458 million).

In at ninth and 10th are former Bayern Munich midfielder Owen Hargreaves and former Aston Villa wide man Ashley Young. Hargreaves only lasted a few seasons at the club due to his many injuries, while Young, who is still at Old Trafford, is considered to be a fringe player.
