Manchester City claimed the FA Community Shield after beating Liverpool 5-4 in a penalty shoot-out after regular time ended 1-1 at Wembley Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
It was a blistering start to the game with Liverpool almost scoring in the eighth minute Mohamed Salah found some space just inside the box, but his stinging shot shaved the wrong side of the post.
Four minutes later City took the lead thanks to a fantastic team goal when Raheem Sterling was set free inside the area by David Silva and he made no mistake with a lovely finish with just the keeper to beat, 1-0.
Liverpool nearly drew level on the half hour mark when Salah beat two defenders on his way to the edge of the box, but his powerful shot blazed just over the crossbar.
A minute before the break Claudio Bravo pulled off a fantastic save to keep his side in the lead when he denied Georginio Wijnaldum a headed goal from close range at a corner-kick.
Four minutes into the second half Sterling latched onto a long pass into the box and fired goalwards, but while his 16-yard effort beat the keeper it bounced back off the post.
Liverpool took a stranglehold on the game after that and were unlucky not to draw level in the 57th minute when Virgil van Dijk's ten-yard volley at a corner-kick crashed against the crossbar.
A minute later Salah struck the woodwork as well, this time a 20-yard effort from the Egyptian glancing off the right-hand post.
Finally, in the 77th minute Liverpool did find the equaliser when Joel Matip headed home a cross from Van Dijk, 1-1.
Liverpool kept pressing forward in the final ten minutes of the match and to be bluntly honest City were fortunate to get through the 90 minutes with the match all-square.
In the shoot-out only Liverpool's Wijnaldum saw his penalty saved as City won the 5-4 on penalties.
