English Premier League

Result:Burnley 1-0 Manchester City

Venue:Turf Moor

Date:14 March

A George Boyd volley was enough to secure a surprise 1-0 win for Burnley when they hosted league contenders Manchester City at Turf Moor on Saturday evening.

It was a cagey start at Turf Moore with two teams at opposite ends of the table both in dire need of the points at stake, possession was being given away cheaply and neither side showed much intent or ability to break into the final third.

The first real chance of the game came in the 21st minute when Sam Vokes had a chance on goal but his headed effort was wide of the mark. Almost 10 minutes later, Edin Dzeko produced the game's first shot on target but Tom Heaton managed to stick a foot out to deny the Bosnian talisman.

Momentum shifted in City's favour and The Citizens continued to knock on the door, failing to convert their chances, and the teams headed into the break deadlocked at 0-0.

The second half started in much better fashion as the two teams seemed to be more offensive, and George Boyd almost grabbed the game's opener in the 58th minute but his shot was just inches wide with Joe Hart surely beaten.

Three minutes later, Boyd did beat Hart with another well struck volley to give the hosts a slender 1-0 lead.

Manuel Pellegrini's men pushed for the equaliser but Burnley held their own, with City's next chance coming in the 81st minute when Sergio Aguero was at the end of a Yaya Toure pass but the Argentine attacker failed to guide his header on target.

Manchester City had a penalty claim waved away in the 91st minute, and that was it, the game ending 1-0 in favour of a struggling Burnley outfit.

In other results on Saturday Leicester City and Hull City played out to a goalless draw, West Brom beat Stoke City thanks to a Brown Ideye goal, while Aston Villa got a convincing 4-0 away win at Sunderland, thanks to braces from Christian Benteke and Gabi Agbonlahor.
