Result: West Bromwich Albion 1-2 Manchester City
Date: 20 September 2017
Venue: The Hawthornes
Leroy Sane scored either side of half-time to hand Manchester City a 2-1 victory against West Bromwich Albion in the English League Cup.
Pep Guardiola made no less than eight changes to his starting line-up that dismantled Watford at the weekend. That included a welcomed return for former Borussia Dortmund playmaker Ilkay Gundogan who has been a bit part player since his return from injury.
City took a very early lead in their third round League Cup tie against the Baggies on Wednesday evening at the Hawthorns.
Sane scored the first goal to put the citizens in the lead as early as the third minute in a move that included 54 completed passes and some brilliant work by Raheem Sterling down the right flank led to a early breakthrough for the visitors.
In the second half the home side started the brighter but appeared short on ideas when in possession of the ball.
City were dealt an severe blow when Gundogan went down after a Claudio Yacob challenge left the midfielder in heap on the deck. He was subsequently replaced minutes later by Kyle Walker.
Yacob scored a timely equaliser to give his side a lifeline in the 72nd minute. The West Brom midfielder finished from close range after questionable City defending left him unmarked from a corner.
However, City restored their lead five minutes later as Sane bagged his second goal of the encounter.
The Baggies missed two clear cut chances by Hal Robson-Kanu to level matters in the closing stages, as the Citizens held on for the win.
