Wolfsburg leapfrogged Borussia Dortmund into fourth spot after defeating Stuttgart 1-0 on Sunday evening.
After suffering defeat to Bayern Munich on Wednesday evening, Wolfsburg bounced back thanks to Josip Brekalo's 49th minute strike.
The hosts will now end the year in fourth spot while Stuttgart find themselves in seventh position.
Both sides will be involved in DFP Pokal action this week before the mid-season break.
Freiburg registered a third straight win in the Bundesliga after thrashing Hertha Berlin 4-1 on Sunday afternoon.
Vincenzo Grifo opened the scoring on seven minutes for the hosts but Berlin were back on level terms through Dodi Lukebakio's strike on 52 minutes.
Ermedin Demirovic restored Freiburg's lead on 59 minutes before Manuel Gulde and Nils Petersen wrapped up the win.
The win took Freiburg up to 10th spot while Hertha sit seven points above the drop zone in 14th position.
